Fowler had a very quiet 30th birthday in Vang Vieng - but the main event was tubing the next day - a much more civilised celebration.The Nam Xong river has many bars and cafes along the river bank where one can hop out of the tube and get a drink or some food and have a go on one of the numerous rope swings which was great fun. The music drifting down the river tends to be of the old Doors and Stones numbers giving the experience a very "Apocalypse Now" feel - ands cause to be alert for any snipers in the jungle.
